Here at A & J Fasteners, we have heard tales of many DIY disasters over the years, from hinges put on the wrong way, crooked shelves, to perhaps the most common, the flatpack fiasco.
Flatpack furniture can be a great, cost-effective way to furnish your home, but the building process can be a bit of a nightmare for even the most seasoned DIY enthusiast. So we got our heads together and here are our top tips for preventing a DIY flatpack disaster:
1. Prepare your work area
Wherever possible, build the item of furniture in the room where it is going to be used. There’s nothing worse than trying to manoeuvre a double wardrobe through a doorway after spending 3 hours building it! Instead, clear enough space to complete the task, it will save you a lot of headaches later.
2. Check you have all the pieces
The first page of your instructions will generally list all of the items contained in the flatpack, including all the screws, nuts, bolts etc. Check this before starting to build, it can be incredibly frustrating to get halfway through before finding out the manufacturer forgot something!
3. Use the right tools for the job
Often tools such as allen keys may be provided for you, however sometimes you may need to use additional tools such as a screwdriver. Make sure you have what you need to hand, it will save time, preventing you from having to rummage through your toolbox part way through your masterpiece.
4. Read the instructions
Yes, yes, many think this is a waste of time, particularly if it seems like simple item to build. But the instructions are there to help you! Make sure that you follow them as much as possible, paying particular attention to which fixings to use and where. Using the wrong screws in the wrong places could lead to irreversible damage to your furniture.
5. Take your time
Make sure you have enough time to complete the build. Rushing will cause carelessness which will only lead to disaster!
6. Get help where it’s needed
Having someone around to help hold pieces in place while you screw them in can be invaluable! Wherever possible, having another set of hands is definitely an asset!
7. Be patient and breathe!
Don’t try to force pieces into place. If something isn’t working, look again at the instructions, take your time, figure out what the problem is, before trying again. Using brute force may be tempting at times but may also cause more problems than it solves. If it is becoming frustrating, it’s time for a tea break!
